The word “metropolitan” comes from the Ancient Greek word “metropolis” meaning “mother city.” The world has known many great cities since the dawn of civilization. Rome is considered to be the world’s oldest metropolis and is believed to be home to over a million people by year 1. This shows that more people would rather live in Year 1 Rome than 2017 Boston. Rome is great, but then there’s Paris: the city of lights. Paris is home to art, culture, and is home to the European statue of Liberty, so we give some love to Paris. Then, of course, there’s London, another magnificent metropolis. London was the world’s first truly international city but has always managed to maintain its quaint feeling, even while being home to over 8 million residents.
But then there’s New York.
New York is in the heart of every romantic and is the undisputed love of every dreamer. Who in their right mind would agree to pay $2,100 a month to live in a dirty closet with bad plumbing and bugs on a crowded street filled with litter and trains rumbling 10 feet below it in a location where half of the year presents nearly unbearable cold? New Yorkers, that’s who. This isn’t just some trendy town that people live in because it’s fun and has good nightlife, this is a town that people live and breathe, for better or worse, as if it were a marriage. All of it is loved, from the toasted pastrami on rye to the beautiful voice of Bobby Short to the tree in Rock Center to the yellow cabs to the townhomes to the old, converted factories to the west side highway to the lovely incandescent crown that sits atop the Chrysler. The word “metropolitan” almost goes hand-in-hand with New York at this point. Probably some credit goes to our beloved New York Mets for that, but still, it is mainly because New York is truly the ultimate metropolis. We felt it was only right to name one of our Gramercy Bags “The Metropolitan” as a way to pay tribute to the city we love. Like New York, The Metropolitan is rugged, professional, and expertly crafted to allow you to look like a man women will begin to love as you stroll through a city the whole world already loves.
